Enslaved People of Greene County, Georgia

This page is dedicated to recording names 
of enslaved people of Greene County, Georgia I find in historical records. My hope is that it will help the descendants of families our ancestors enslaved (mine included) as they research their family history.

  1. They have names—Violet, Jane, and Mandy: the story of a slave woman named Becky owned by my ancestor who drowned her three children in a well
  2. Robert L. Hobbs, a Revolutionary Patriot: 16 named slaves - Isaac, George, Dick, Henry, John, Nelson, Charles, Cheney, Rachel, Ester, Mary, Jane, Hampton, Dave, Lewis, Lucy 
  3. Absalom Madison Janes: his Will and an “Appraisement of Negroes” lists the names of 105 slaves
  4. Thomas Gresham Janes: his Will, Inventory and Appraisement lists the names of 52 slaves
  5. Felix William Janes: one of three minor heirs of Absalom Madison Janes Sr. Fifty slaves named in the estate records
  6. Lovicia Ann Elizabeth Janes: slave Jack named in a legal advertisement that ran in The Temperance Banner, Penfield, Georgia
  7. Thomas Gresham Janes (full life timeline): 38 slaves named - 28 from Greene County (included above), 7 from Taliaferro County, and 3 from Paulding County
